Napa Valley
We are proud to call Napa Valley the home base for Component Wine Company. Our first wines from Napa started with our 2013 Petit Verdot, of which we produced only 2 barrels. In 2014, we produced Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and of course, Petit Verdot. The vineyards for the red wines are situated in the Pritchard Hill region of the valley, owned by wonderful growers & producers that we are honored to work with.
Sonoma
We have produced wines in Sonoma since 2020. Upon receiving the opportunity to work with the Historic Monte Rosso Vineyard we began producing our Sémillon from the famed site in 2020. Starting with 2021’s Sauvignon Blanc vintage we couldn’t pass up the opportunity to make a wine from Dry Creek Valley.
YOUNT MILL VINEYARD | YOUNTVILLE (SÉMILLON 2016-2019 vintages)
The Yount Mill Vineyard has been owned by the Hoxsey family for 4 generations and is currently one of the largest continuous plantings in the Napa Valley. This vast site has been farmed organically in its entirety since 1987. We’re currently sourcing Semillon from Yount Mill, which happens to be the last head trained, dry farmed section in this historic vineyard. The vines are on drought tolerant rootstock in alluvial soil with 8 x 12 vine spacing. Yount Mill Semillon ripens quite early at low sugars giving way to light and refreshing flavors.
PRITCHARD HILL | Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc & Petit Verdot
Pritchard Hill is widely regarded as the “Grand Cru” region of Napa Valley, home to some of the most exclusive & iconic wines from the valley: Colgin Cellars, Bryant Family Vineyard, Continuum, Ovid and Chappellet. Although Pritchard Hill is not an official AVA, due to the name being owned by the Chappellet family, the region certainly contains some of the most coveted land in Napa Valley. The soils on Pritchard Hill are varied, but mainly consist of Sobrante series soils - volcanic & metamorphic rock. Stylistically, wines produced from this region are silky, elegant and vibrant.
Caldwell vineyard | Coombsville
The cool climate grape, Cabernet Franc, thrives on this stunning site in the coolest sub-region of Napa Valley for Bordeaux varietals: Coombsville. Situated in the eastern mountain range of Napa Valley, the Vaca Range, this vineyard sits on a collapsed volcano. As my winemaker partner Marc Gagnon mentions, “although the elevation is 600 ft, the soils are actually composed of high elevation soils more common above 1,000 ft, allowing for incredible & unique specificity - unlike anything in Napa Valley.” We are thrilled to work with this site in upcoming vintages & cannot wait to watch these wines evolve.
FARFALLA VINEYARD | DRY CREEK VALLEY | SAUVIGNON BLANC
Farfalla Vineyard is a 10.7 acre estate vineyard planted in 1999 originally to Zinfandel and Petite Sirah, but was partially replanted in 2019/20 and now has 16 distinct varieties including Sauvignon Blanc. Stress can help many grapes thrive, however, we feel that sauvignon blanc shines best when it is on a more fertile soil, like Dry Creek Valley’s Yolo loam. This sedimentary soil also helps impart a crisp, salty minerality. Sauvignon blanc thrives in Dry Creek Valley thanks to its notable diurnal temperature variation, although the grapes loves sun it develops the most complexity when night temperatures drop significantly. The cooling influence from the appellation’s proximity to the Pacific Ocean and the nearby Russian River Valley help ensure even ripening conditions year to year.
Monte rosso vineyard | sonoma | SÉMILLON
In the mid 1880's, Emanuel Goldstein and Benjamin Dreyfus, partners in a grocery business in San Francisco, traveled north to Sonoma on horse and carriage to build a winery & plant a vineyard. The site they planted is today known as Monte Rosso Vineyard. Monte Rosso is an incredibly rugged terrain, atop Moon Mountain, on the back side of the Mayacamas range dividing Sonoma and Napa. 135 years ago, these two incredible gentlemen dreamt of creating something special on this site - and wow, did they succeed.
In 2020, Marc Gagnon and I traveled up that same mountain, to meet with one of the most wonderful and knowledgeable vineyard managers in California, Brenae Royal. Brenae manages this epic site & has become a good friend. She lives on property, living and breathing this vineyard. When we shared with her our vision for expressing Monte Rosso, she generously offered us a tiny piece of the original vines of Sémillon on the property. We harvested a tiny amount - 1 ton - from these ancient vines.
In the cellar, we knew we had to do something different from the Sémillon we made in Yountville. Quite quickly, the classical Bordeaux style of this variety was all we could envision for it. No new oak, long natural fermentation & extended contact with lees. The resulting wine is silky, aromatic and salty.
The Facility
In 2019, we moved into our new shared home at Caldwell Vineyard, in the mountains east of downtown Napa. We invite you to come taste with us in the caves by emailing Jamie Alleman - jamie@componentwine.com.
